Paper by Smith et al 2000
Looked effectivness land evaluation techniques using FAO sustainable principled framework - economic feasible, socially acceptable and maintaining ecological processes
Evaluated effectiveness identified its not working due to confusion about the many definitions and inadequate information
since aim remains to maintain productivity with limited regard to ecosystem eg. australian sugar industry.
Propose mew model Threat Identification Model (TIM)
based on the identification of unsustainable processes and the precautionary principle to produce best land management
Main advantages are;
1 can carried out ex ante before land management practices implemented
2 removes the need to define sustainability criteria and indicators
3 it utilises current understanding of the causes and effects of land degradation and how different land-management practices influence these;
(4) it links this knowledge to definite land management options.

Kyoto
The need to promote sustainable development first mentioned in 1992 in UNFCCC, but nothing done to implement in practice.
Climate change and SD remained separate discourses.
PROBLEM might arise if anyone has identified that SD now to be integrated as cross-theme idea.
Although no only now at Bali being put forward. Could counter if it has not gained more prominence in over a decade, its time to be HONEST.
There are over 100 definitions SD - social construction explaining the number of constructions
Wilkinson and Cary (2003) propose - sustainability is a idealistic and unattainable , a better approach would be to start with unsustainablity since it is a known point - from here improved knowledge and understanding will lead to progressively less unsustainable states

why shell is crap!
Shell in Nigeria
Shell has been working in the Niger Delta since 1956, causing problems to:
- local communities - gas flares burn day and night, roaring like jet engines and polluting the air with thick sooty particles that stick to almost everything and have serious health impacts.
- livelihoods - oil is a root of conflict and suffering in Nigeria. Over 1000 law suits have been filed against Shell, yet it still refuses to pay compensation costs.
- the environment - polluting oil spills and fires have occurred for decades due to Shell's rusting pipes seriously affecting local villages, biodiversity, and contributing towards climate change.
The Nigerian government banned gas flaring in 1969, but Shell continues to flout the law.
Shell around the world:
Nigeria is not the only place where Shell is putting its profits before the lives of local people and the environment.
In Russia, Shell's is threatening:
- the remaining western Pacific grey whales
- Sakhalin's rich biodiversity
- the livelihoods of the island's people
Other examples include
- Refinery hazards in Durban, South Africa
- Health problems in Louisana
- Contamination in Sao Paulo, Brazil
- Financing Indonesian forest destruction

Why BP is crap!!
BP is building a huge new oil pipeline through Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey. The pipeline is likely to:
- Worsen climate change
- Increase oil spills
- Cause social strife for local people
If BP is so committed to a green future, why is it investing in a dirty oil project with a 40 year lifespan?
Each year, the pipeline will transport oil whose impact on climate change will be the equivalent to the pollution from every power station in the UK.
BP has signed agreements with Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey which make it exempt from any laws - including environmental and labour - that may affect its profits
As predicted, BP's pipeline is already causing problems:
- Poor health and safety: Inappropriate materials and construction methods causing enviornmental, health and safety risks.
- Human rights abuses: A Turkish campaigner has allegedly been tortured because he spoke out against the pipeline.
